Ballinavortha House is an ideal rural retreat with an abundance of amenities and festivals on our doorstep. Hillwalking; historic sites and famous gardens and garden festivals; fishing on the Rivers Slaney, Barrow and Nore; golfing on two championship 18 hole courses; equestrian activities and cycling are all within a few miles access. The towns of Carlow, Co Carlow, Gorey, Co Wexford and medieval Kilkenny offer shopping, cinemas, swimming pools and pubs and restaurants.

We are developing our garden using organic principles. This attracts a great variety of birds and visiting animals. We hold an annual Dawn Chorus outing in May to nearby Urelands Hill. http://www.Birdwatchireland.ie

Many historic, ornamental, organic (including sensory, herbaceous and nurseries) gardens. Nearby Altamount Gardens is a beautiful 100 acre old world garden both formal and informal with lawns and clipped yews sloping down to a lake surrounding by rare trees and shrubs. A fascinating walk through the Arboretum, Bog Garden and Ice Age Glen with its canopy of ancient oaks leads to the river Slaney where you may see salmon and trout rising, perhaps even an otter, and throughout the garden, an abundance of birds, butterflies and squirrels. Historic Coolattin Woods at nearby Shillelagh is an arboreal treasure.

Nearby are Aghowle; portal dolmen at Haroldstown, Tullow, standing stones on roadside at Tullow, triple bullaun stone at Clonmore which was used for pounding ingredients in prehistoric times, and at Aghade, Tullow is a large holed stone of great antiquity belived to have been part of a megalithic tomb; it was believed that sick infants if passed through the six inch hole would restored to health.

Rivers Nore, Barrow and Slaney nearby rich in fishing and recreational activities.
The Barrow is one of the Three Sisters - the rivers that drain the southeast of Ireland. The Barrow was made navigable for barges in the 1800's and the walk (Barrow Way) follows the old towpaths through pleasant rural wooded scenery.
